Abstract Competition

Guideline for submission

The following are guidelines set by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Deviation from the guidelines may result not only in delays but in non-acceptance of the submission. Abstracts should be submitted via the RCSEd website (Submit option below). The deadline for submissions is midnight on 15th March 2018.

Abstracts submitted for presentation should not exceed 300 words.  All abbreviations used must be described fully in the text once.  Please ensure that the presenting author is listed first. There can only be one presenter per abstract.

Abstracts should be structured as follows:

  • Background - introduces the topic and the problem(s) being addressed.

  • Aim(s)/Objective(s)

  • Methods – including the patients, should be concise.

  • Results – figures and tables will not be accepted.

  • Discussion and/or conclusion.

Formatting:

  • The text for all abstract submissions should be in 11pt Arial, ranged left.

  • Authors are asked to refrain from any other formatting e.g. - indentation.

  • All abbreviations used must be described fully in the text once.

  • Figures and tables will not be accepted.

Abstracts must be of surgical relevance and judges will be looking for the following:

  • Evidence of a thorough understanding of the subject area.

  • A clear, concise and well-presented answer to the question posed by the abstract topic.

  • Originality.

We will aim to let entrants know whether their submission has been accepted for poster or oral presentation by the end of March. If accepted for either, entrants must purchase tickets and register for the conference. Abstracts selected for oral presentation must not exceed 5 minutes in length and you should be prepared to answer questions on your presentation with questions limited to 2 minutes.

Those short-listed for poster presentation will be required to bring their abstract in poster format which must be in A1 size. Posters will be judged on appearance and a 2-minute presentation.

Prizes will be awarded for the best Oral and best Poster presentation.
